International Business Ethics

Paper , Order, or Assignment Requirements

Antitrust laws were essentially created to stop businesses that got too large from blocking competition and abusing their power. Mergers and monopolies can limit the choices offered to consumers because smaller businesses are not usually able to compete. Although free and open competition ensures lower prices and new and better products, it has the potential to significantly limit market diversity. Review the following examples of how mergers and acquisitions have affected the way in which companies do business. Prepare a research paper in APA format that demonstrates your analysis of the international legal issues that are involved in both examples. Submitting your assignment in APA format means, at a minimum, you will need the following: •Title page: Remember the running head and title in all capital letters. •Abstract: This is a summary of your paper, not an introduction. Begin writing in third-person voice. •Body: The body of your paper begins on the page following the title page and abstract page, and it must be double-spaced between paragraphs. The typeface should be 12-pt. Times Roman or 12-pt. Courier in regular black type. Do not use color, bold type, or italics except as required for APA level headings and references. The deliverable length of the body of your paper for this assignment is 5–7 pages. In-text academic citations to support your decisions and analysis are required. A variety of academic sources is encouraged. •Reference page: References that align with your in-text academic sources are listed on the final page of your paper. The references must be in APA format using appropriate spacing, hang indention, italics, and upper- and lower-case usage as appropriate for the type of resource used. Remember, the reference page is not a bibliography, but it is a further listing of the abbreviated in-text citations used in the paper. Every referenced item must have a corresponding in-text citation. Example 1 Federal antitrust enforcers are investigating whether a multinational pharmaceutical company has attempted to minimize the impact of generic competition to one of its most profitable prescription drugs. This antidepressant drug is the company’s best seller, with sales last year of $2.11 billion, representing a 22% increase from the year before. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is conducting an investigation to determine whether the company engaged in activities to prevent generic alternatives to the prescription drug from entering the market. Specifically, the FTC is challenging a practice among brand-name and generic drug manufacturers to agree to delay the introduction of the lower priced generic drugs to the market. Answer the following questions: •Why would the drug maker want to stymie generic competition? Explain your response. •What types of legal barriers to market entry exist? •What are the possible ethical dilemmas that are present in this example? Example 2 The boards of 2 major telecommunications companies recently agreed to a $16 billion merger that would create the world’s largest telecommunications company in the world. Although some agree that the synergy between these companies could be dynamic, others feel consumers could ultimately pay the price for the merger, depending on which company becomes dominant in the various service areas. Answer the following questions: •Why do you think consumer advocates have expressed concern over such merger possibilities? •Other than pricing, what are some pitfalls that consumers might have to deal with when 2 major companies merge? •What are the possible ethical dilemmas that are present in this example?

Feedback Loop and Organizational Learning

Paper , Order, or Assignment Requirements

Case Assignment

Identify one Balancing Loop and one Reinforcing Loop. These feedback loops should be critical to Whole Foods Market’s performance and success. You should have a good idea of what these are from your previous analysis.

Explain each one of these loops – what are the causal factors and how do they affect each other. For the Reinforcing Loop, look for an area where there is growth. For the Balancing Loop, look for goal behavior. Once you have identified and explained these critical feedback loops, identify how Whole Foods Market has generated organizational learning, and how they can go further and generate additional organizational learning. What do they need to do to improve their performance further?

Determine the two critical feedback loops. Describe each Feedback Loop that you identify in your organization and explain why you selected them. Make sure you explain the Loop, the cause and effect process within the Loop. You could also include a Causal Loop Diagram. If you do, show the arrows and direction of effect (+ or -). Also, determine what the warrant is for your case.

Briefly discuss the theory of organizational learning so that you provide a summary of this information to the executives – establish this as common ground.

Identify the learning activities in each feedback loop that Whole Foods Market has already undertaken.

Identify the opportunities for organizational learning in each Feedback Loop. Make a Case that these are learning opportunities. Logically show how the feedback process provides an opportunity for the organization to learn and improve its performance. Be precise. Depth and breadth in your discussion is always a good thing.

Paper , Order, or Assignment Requirements

ABC Company and Whole Foods Market have decided they want to do an Organizational Diagnosis to determine how various aspects of Whole Foods Market are aligned, such as inputs, resources, productivity, throughput effort, outputs, performance, strategy, etc. They want to know if there are any significant issues at Whole Foods Market and how these issues might affect its integration into ABC Company.

Review Case Analysis since it is so important in this final course. The purpose of a Case is to show that you have thought critically about the subject matter that you are learning and to make an argument for a Claim about the specific situation in the Case Assignment. Stephen Toulmin has developed an Argument Methodology that is very useful in Making a Case. To review Case Analysis and Toulmin’s Argument Methodology, go to Making a Case page.

Case Assignment

There is some disagreement in the Executive ranks as to which OD method or model should be used. Some executives have familiarity with a couple of models, but it seems to be only based on what they have read or heard about. You need to explore some models and determine their strengths and weaknesses, and ultimately recommend which one is best for Whole Foods Market. As part of making that determination, you will also need to identify several critical issues facing Whole Foods Market.

The executives want you to include the 7S model, the Congruence Model, and the Burke-Litwin Model in your analysis. Pick three or four more models to include for a well-rounded group of OD models.

Prepare a report in which you include the following:

A brief overview of what each of the six or seven models you are analyzing does.

Clearly identify the strengths and weaknesses of each model.

Identify and discuss two or three issues that Whole Foods Market is facing.

Determine which model you think is the best one to use.

Recommend which model to use. Make a Strong Case. Explain why your selection would be the best choice, and how the recommended model can be used to help diagnose the issues you have identified.

This should be a 5- to 7-page paper (not including Title Page and References).
